No date set for handing over of Ondundu land

No date has been set as yet for when land at Ondundu outside Tsumeb will be officially handed over to the town’s municipality.
This was said by Tsumeb Municipality Strategic Liaison Officer, Stella Imalwa-Nangolo in an interview with Nampa last week.
Ondundu is a settlement north of Tsumeb for people employed at the local copper mines and farms.
Residents from the Kuvukiland area attempted to grab land there on two occasions before and after the independence celebrations last month.
It is currently owned by Weatherly International, which is expected to hand it over to the municipality to service and develop into a residential area.
Imalwa-Nangolo said there has been no evidence of illegal structures being erected at Ondundu.
“The residents of the settlement have eagerly assisted the authority to contain the situation by removing the poles that the land grabbers attempted to put around illegally demarcated plots,” she said.
Imalwa-Nangolo further said the municipality is also concerned about the increase in street vendors at the local open market.
They mostly sell fruit and vegetables acquired from farms on the outskirts of Tsumeb.
“The increase in street vendors, many unregistered, has made the open market uncontrollable and unhygienic,” she said.
Imalwa-Nangolo went on to say the municipality has resolved to fund the construction of the first phase of a formal open market structure for N.dollars 800 000.
This would help to contain the number of vendors. They will also eventually be asked to pay rates to the local authority.
The preliminary design of the envisaged open market has been completed.
