The Dibasen Combined School (CS) from the Erongo Region and Ndiyona CS from the Kavango East Region are the overall champions of the 2017 Metropolitan/Swabou Summer Cup that ended here Saturday evening.
The boys from Dibasen CS defeated their counterparts from Nyangana CS in the Kavango East Region by 2-1 in the football final, while Ndiyona CS handed the Oshaaluwata CS from the Omusati Region a 24-18 defeat in the netball final.
Regional football and netball champions from the Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Kavango East, Erongo, Hardap and //Kharas regions contested for top honours at the Oshakati Independence Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Metropolitan/Swabou Communications and Branding Officer, Laurencia Prinzonsky told Nampa on Saturday her company sponsored the tournament at its beginning in 2007 with N.dollars 50 000 and the sponsorship increased to N.dollars 450 000 this year.
It is a tournament for primary, junior secondary and combined schools.
As champions, Dibasen and Ndiyona were each awarded a floating trophy, gold medals and N.dollars 15 000.
Nyangana, as the runners-up in the football category, took home N.dollars 9 000 and silver medals, while the Ombuumbuu Junior Secondary School (JSS) from Omusati Region received N.dollars 6 000 and bronze medals for third position. Empleheim CS from the Hardap Region got N.dollars 4 000 for fourth place.
These prizes also applied to netball. The Oshaaluwata girls are runners-up, while defending champions Oshekasheka CS from the Oshana Region ended third. Danie Joubert CS from the Hardap Region ended fourth.
The football defending champions, Okanghudi CS from the Ohangwena Region, were eliminated in the first round of the tournament played on a round-robin basis.
The regional winners (football and netball) were each awarded N.dollars 1 500 before the inter-regional finals. Second and third placed teams received N.dollars 1 000 and N.dollars 500, respectively.
The venue for the finals of next year?s tournament is yet to be determined, said Prinzonsky.
