First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) on Tuesday handed over N.dollars 220 000 for Namibia?s Paralympic athletes to participate in the 2017 IPC World Athletics Championships.
The 2017 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships take place in London from 14 to 25 July. The Namibian team left for the United Kingdom on Tuesday.
The championships see athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities compete.
On Tuesday, FNB Corporate Social Investment Manager Revonia Kahivere said the bank through their Namibia Foundation Trust deemed it important to help the Namibia Paralympic Committee with their financial difficulties ahead of their trip to London.
The Paralympic athletes were uncertain of their participation in the world championships due to unpaid participation fees, accommodation and meals. The line ministry was not in a position to sponsor their trip to London due to a lack of funds.
Kahivere said the athletes are role models and people want to see the best in the world compete during the competition.
?We are really proud to come on board and sponsor the team with N.dollars 220 000 which will be used to pay for the athletes? accommodation, meals and participation fees,? she said.
Deputy Director of Marginalised People and Women in Sport under the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, Jo-Ann Manuel thanked FNB for the financial contribution, saying they have answered the government?s call for the corporate world to meet them halfway in developing sports.
?The money might look little for those from outside but we are really grateful for every cent because this money will really help this team cover their expenses while in London,? she said.
The athletes are Ananias Shikongo; Johannes Nambala; and Lahja Ishitile, who will compete in track events.
The guides are Even Tjiuju and Sydney Kamuaruuma.
Eino Mushila who competes in 200 metre (m) and 100m, will join the team later in the week. He was not allowed to fly from Hosea Kutako International Airport Tuesday because his passport was damaged.
