Okapya annual sports tournament is scheduled for 20 to 22 December 2019

THE second Okapya annual sports tournament is scheduled for 20 to 22 December at Eleven Morning Star soccer field near Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Airport at Okapya, Ondangwa.

The tournament aims to encourage youth participation and unite Namibians from different cultures, and to keep them occupied and entertained during the festive season, said the organisers.

“This helps to reduce the crime rate, especially during the festive season,” co-organiser Sandro Ithana stated.

Ongwediva City from Ongwediva will look to defend their youth soccer title, while Fresh Legends are the defending champions of the veterans sections. Both are intent on retaining their status, which comes with N$10 000 and N$5 000 prize monies, plus a trophy and 18 gold medals.

Second prize is worth N$3 000 and accompanying silver medals, while third place is valued at N$2 000 several and bronze medals.

Registration for these categories is N$900. A player must be 35 years old and above to be eligible for the veterans' section. The youth competition's runner-up is guaranteed N$5 000 and medals, with N$3 000 and medals for third place. Registration is N$1 000 per team.

“The registration for teams is now open, and the due date is Thursday, 19 December. The draw of the tournament will be held at Eleven Morning Star soccer field on the same day, and all teams are requested to send two members to attend the draw. Apart from that, exhibitors' stalls are also available for N$500, which will be given on a first-come first-serve basis.
