Otjozondjupa amateur boxers training hard for regional trials

OTJIWARONGO - Under 20 amateur boxers in the Otjozondjupa Region are training hard to prepare for their regional trials taking place at Otjiwarongo later this month.

Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Boxing Federation, Onesmus Kalipi said in an interview with Nampa on Tuesday 35 boxers – four from Otavi, 10 from Okahandja, six from Okakarara and 15 from Otjiwarongo - are expected to compete in the trials on 21 and 22 March.

“The trials will select the 10 best amateur boxers to compete at national level in Windhoek from 12 to 16 May,” said Kalipi.

The boxers who win at the national trials will form part of the national team that will represent Namibia at international tournaments, he said.

Kalipi said members of the Namibia Sports Commission from the capital will also attend the trials at Otjiwarongo.

“Entrance will be free at the Paresis Show Grounds, so come in numbers to support your children,” he said.

Head coach of the Otjiwarongo Boxing Academy, Thomas Gabriel on Monday said his 15 boxers have been hard at work, training since January this year to prepare for the regional trials.

He hopes to see half of his boxers become part of the national u20 boxing team that will amongst others represent Namibia at the African Games later this year.

“We are working on the boys' physical and mental fitness, punching speed, movements and discipline,” Gabriel said.

The 2018 MTC Sunshine Boxing Cup is also expected to take place at Otjiwarongo in May this year. - Nampa
