An 11-year-old boy died at Otjiwarongo Tuesday after a garbage truck drove over him at the local dumpsite.
The accident occurred around 13h20, spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa.
“The deceased has been identified as Petrus Kapuka,” she said.
His next of kin have been informed.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the deceased tried to climb onto the truck as it entered the waste disposal site, but he missed the handle he had tried to grab and fell.
Mbeha said the boy landed under the truck’s left rear tyre and died on the spot.
Otjiwarongo Municipality Chief Executive Officer, Ismael /Howoseb was shocked when informed of the incident.
“It is unfortunate that this has happened while we are busy erecting a fence and sewage ponds to prohibit people and animals from entering these two places,” he said.
He urged residents to stay away from the dumpsite and sewage ponds for their safety.
