Ministry of Urban and Rural Development bails out Rundu Town Council

Rundu’s water supply will be reconnected after the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development announced that it will pay NamWater enough for the town to be supplied for the next three months.
This was announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry Thursday.
The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) placed Rundu on a pre-paid credit system and removed it from the conventional water supply system for more effective revenue collection after the town accrued debt of close to N.dollars 60 million.
The town has been without water since last Friday.
The Rundu Town Council’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Sikongo Haihambo told Nampa on Monday they do not have enough money to buy units to have the water reconnected.
Residents have thus been entirely reliant on the Okavango River.
The agriculture ministry’s statement said Rundu consumes about N.dollars 2 million worth of water monthly. The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development will pay the first N.dollars 2 million directly to NamWater.
The town council has also been urged to intensify the collection of revenue from consumers for the NamWater bill to be settled timeously.
“The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development will notify all Government-related institutions that owe RTC to settle their water accounts with immediate effect,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry further said in collaboration with NamWater it will continue to monitor the situation and regularly update the urban and rural development ministry to ensure adherence to the arrangements as agreed upon.
