Oshana SPCA donates spay sets to State veterinarians

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) donated canine and feline spay sets to the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry at Ondangwa last week.
Secretary of the Oshana SPCA, Wilmarie Horn in a media statement issued over the weekend said her association in the regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto relies only on the services of the State veterinarians as there are no private veterinarians in those regions.
They therefore decided to donate four canine and four feline spay sets to the State veterinarians. Horn’s law firm, W Horn Attorneys, donated the spay sets to the Oshana SPCA, which in turn donated it to the Ondangwa Veterinary Practice.
“Oshana SPCA is planning spaying and neutering campaigns and will rely on the State veterinarians to assist us in this very important project,” Horn said in a telephonic interview with Nampa on Monday.
The spay sets were brought in from America and cost N.dollars 4 000 in total.
Horn said other medical equipment and resources such as operation tables and donations to cover sterilisation costs are needed for the envisaged campaigns.
She went on to say currently, the charges for sterilisation by the Directorate of Veterinary Services are N.dollars 450 for a female dog, N.dollars 300 for a male dog, N.dollars 350 for a female cat and N.dollars 200 for a male cat.
She said spayed pets live longer and healthier lives as spaying helps prevent things such as uterine infections and breast tumours, which she says are malignant or cancerous in about 50 per cent of dogs and 90 per cent of cats.
“Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection against diseases,” Horn said, adding that neutering of male pets helps to prevent testicular cancer and prostate problems.
