Vice President Nangolo Mbumba has been elected as the new Chancellor of the University of Namibia (UNAM), replacing former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, whose term came to an end in November 2017.
A media statement issued by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Simon Namesho on Wednesday said Mbumba’s official handover by the outgoing chancellor will take place on a date yet to be announced.
Namesho also informed Nampa upon inquiry that Mbumba was elected by the university’s council members, who had also elected Pohamba.
Namesho said the first chancellor, who was Founding President, Dr Sam Nujoma, was not elected as he was the first chancellor and was automatically appointed, but every chancellor afterwards is supposed to be elected as that is procedure.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Lazarus Hangula also recently announced his retirement from the institution at the end of the current semester in July.
